Rocket League’s latest announcement will see the game become fully cross-platform. In a special blog announcement, Psyonix has finally announced the implementation of a cross-platform play for its users.

The announcement.

Full Cross-Platform play arrives in Rocket League., Nexus Gaming LLC

With special thanks to all of our friends and colleagues at PlayStation, we are thrilled to announce that starting RIGHT NOW, Rocket League has entered the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program! Players on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam can now randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online match types (i.e. Casual, Competitive, and Extra Modes).

To make sure that Cross-Platform play is enabled (it is by default), head to the “Main Menu,” select “Options” and then make sure the “Cross-Platform Play” box is checked in the “Gameplay” tab. And that’s all there is to it. You are now ready to play against gamers on other platforms across the world!

But what about cross-platform parties? In our first update this year (more information coming soon), we will release our cross-platform party system, which allows you to partner up with friends on any platform with the push of a few buttons.

Should you want to play with friends on other platforms before cross-platform parties release, however, you can! Just select “Play” from the “Main Menu,” then “Private Match,” followed by “Create” or “Join Private Match,” and you’re set from there.

Today’s announcement is an important one for us here at Psyonix because we know how much our community has wanted FULL cross-platform support for quite some time. It’s because of YOU, our fans, and our generous partners on all systems and services that have made this possible in the first place. On behalf of the entire team, THANK YOU for your passion and persistence as we continue to do our best to make Rocket League the best experience we can.

We’ll see you out on the field!

A Promising Future

Rocket League has a promising future. The innocent nature of the game means that there are almost never any objections to the same. It has a very low level of toxicity as well as the lack of violence is something that puts this game on the forefront.

The Game has a very high skill-ceiling and yet is fun for the casual player. The game is on par to become a headline sport for the upcoming WSOE and ELeague tournaments. Despite Cross-platform play now live on the servers, there are still limitations to the same. Psyonix developers were active in the Rocket League Subreddit answering questions.

Hiya! No cross-platform trading plans at this time, thanks bud!

Psyonix Corey revealed several details surrounding the cross-platform play. He was able to guide players on functionalities such as Chat, Recent players, Stay as Team etc.

Lots to unpack here, here we go:

  • No “Party Up” quick chat, but something I can circulate internally for adding.

  • You send Party Invites to Friends (platform or RocketID) and they’ll get a notification they can accept asynchronously. If you’re talking about inviting non-friends, you’d need their RocketID and have to friend them (and they have to accept) before you can party up. Given that you can’t chat cross-platform by default, this is tricky, however…

  • There’s a “Recent Players” tab in the in-game Friends List you can use to friend people you played with recently without them having to chat their RocketID to you. The Friends List is part of the bottom panel next to Party Chat and can be accessed mid/endgame, you don’t have to go to the Main Menu to use it.

  • Chat Waivers aren’t unique to any particular qualifications e.g. Club Membership. It’s simply only allowed for Party Chat specifically. Private Match “open chat” would require us to get an additional waiver that we don’t currently have.

  • “Stay as Team” is still on our dev roadmap but isn’t part of this update. We were waiting because the work would have been wasted if we did it pre-party system changes vs. post. Can’t confirm a date yet but it’s a priority. This would allow you to circumvent the above process (having to friend them first)

Ultimately your use cases are geared more towards friend finding and party discovery which is something we’d like to keep supporting better, but our focus for the first RocketID release is for people who know each other already and want to play cross-platform. This assumes they can share their IDs with each other using known methods e.g. Discord, Text Message. There are ways to still make it work (e.g. the Recent Players tab) but there’s definitely room for improvement for the use cases you’re asking about.

There are no suggestions for account linking at this point in time. They have not ruled it out yet, but they will be looking into the suggestion in the near future.

No plans for account-linking at this time, and thanks for the suggestion!
