Telecommunications company Cox Communications has signed on as Overwatch League franchise Atlanta Reign‘s first corporate sponsor.

Cox Enterprises partnered with Province, Inc. to form Atlanta Esports Ventures, the company that owns the Atlanta Reign franchise. Cox Communications is a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises.

The deal includes Cox Communications sponsoring Atlanta Reign’s training facility and acting as a jersey sponsor.

Paul Hamilton, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlanta Esports Ventures discussed the deal in a release: “There is no doubt that Cox is a great fit for the Atlanta Reign. Our audience relies on the technology they provide, and we believe this sponsorship will continue to demonstrate their commitment to esports and the fans.”

Atlanta Reign joined the Overwatch League as one of eight expansion teams ahead of the competition’s second season. Back in May last year – ahead of expansion slots being sold – it was reported that it would cost each investor between $30-60 million (£22.9-45.8 million) to enter the league.

Mark Greatrex, Chief Marketing and Sales Officer for Cox Communications added: “Cox has invested billions of dollars in its network to create the best broadband experience nationwide and the gaming community includes some of our most enthusiastic users. Our mutual passion for connections in real and virtual worlds and commitment to cementing Atlanta as a technology leader makes this sponsorship a natural fit.”

Esports Insider says: It’s clear to see why this sponsorship went through, considering both Atlanta Reign and Cox Communications are owned by the same company. It never feels quite right when these types of deals happen, no matter the sport.
